Web Design and Website Build Cost

If you’re considering having a new website designed and built, cost is of course a major factor. There are a number of people and companies available, ranging from offshore freelancer providers through to trendy London web design agencies.

Types of Web Designers and Their Rates

As a rough guide, when working with a web designer, the website cost can vary between £100 to £10,000. The price varies depending on the rate the person/company charges and the complexity of the website. Please see below for typical hourly rates:

  • Overseas / offshore – £10 to £25
  • Independent UK-based freelance web designer – £25 to £50
  • Small web design agency – £50 to £70
  • Medium web design agency – £70 to £90
  • Larger web design agency – £90 to £200

There are advantages and disadvantages in who to use to create the website. The overseas and freelance options typically have higher risks, whilst the web design agency is a more reliable option. The larger the agency gets, the greater their overheads become. So biggest isn’t always best.

Another option is the DIY approach. With this you will use a tool/platform to develop the website yourself. There is typically an ongoing monthly fee to use the platform. Our DIY website build blog post provides more details including pros and cons.

Example – Small Business ‘Brochure’ Website Cost

A small business ‘brochure’ style website (with say 10 pages) would typically take around 20 hours. Assuming you chose a web agency, the cost would therefore range from £1,000 to £4,000, depending on what size of company you chose.

Example – Medium Sized Website With E-Commerce

A medium sized website with some e-commerce is more complex and would often take around 45 hours. Again, on the assumption you chose a web agency, the cost would range from £2,250 to £9,000, depending on what size of company you chose.

Other Costs

In addition to the website design and build cost, there are also some other costs to factor in. These include one-off costs such as:

  • Writing copy – potentially using a copywriter
  • Stock photos or commissioned photography
  • Themes & plugins
  • Your own time!

There are also on-going (usually annual) costs that are needed including:

  • Hosting
  • Domain name
  • Email
  • Maintenance / content updates

Services and Skills Offered

When working with a web designer, most of the following services and skills will be utilised as part of designing and building the website:

  • Research and analysis
  • Creative visual design
  • Website build
  • Coding
  • Testing
  • Project management & communications
  • Training
  • Maintenance

The on-going annual costs (excluding maintenance) that you’d pay a web design agency typically range from £100 to £800 / year. These vary depending on the size of the website and the size of the agency.
